![]() It's an example of the relationships that these creatures have built amongst themselves, though the devs mention that the relationship between these two isn't quite what you'd expect. This beast is the one that looked rather unassuming in the trailer before spewing loads of lil' fishes from its gob. It doesn't seem to be particularly happy about being asked to yank down trees. The concept art makes this animal look like a bit of a grump. "But the Eternals have built a bond with that creature to encourage it to do this action when they need it." "Pulling down plantlife and feeding off it is just something it does itself," says Stevenson. It doesn't have a trunk, but it does have a whopping great tail with which to pull down trees, which is exactly what we see it doing in the trailer. This large fluffy friend is a creature inspired by elephants. ![]() I really like this image because it grows the idea that Eternals aren't just caring for animals and wildlife, but also the nature and plant life around them, too. The devs say they're fending off a swarm of insects that are a bit like locusts, going through the world and eating through everything. Next up we have a tree that the Eternals are seen protecting. We know that the game more or less revolves around helping the balance of nature, but if the Eternals are looking to "find things within the world", perhaps they're travellers, looking to document these creatures in some way, as well as help them. I almost feel like there's a slight hint here as to what the Eternals are doing in this gorgeous land. "This creature needs others to help it hunt," says art director, Ryan Stevenson, "which is beneficial to the Eternals as well, to find things within the world". It also has a few more teeny tiny hints at what we'll be getting up to as these Eternals.ĭuring the trailer, we see this bat-like bird swoop down and take some food being offered to it by one of the Eternals, and it's one of the first examples of the "symbiotic relationships" with nature that the game seems to be focussing on. That could be due to the fact that Rare was still figuring out what it wanted to do with Everwild, which may in turn have had something to do with Woodroffe's departure. While this commentary doesn't really reveal anything new, it does confirm that these Eternals, the characters shown in the trailer at the Xbox Games Showcase, are indeed player characters. The game has been described as an action-adventure title set in a fantastical and nature-filled setting, perhaps with multiplayer elements. ![]() Little is known regarding Everwild in general. No creative director roles are currently listed on Rare's job listings. Rare will very likely make such announcements as they're able. There's no word on whether O'Conner will fill Woodroffe's role at Rare, though it seems all but certain. O'Conner's worked with Rare going back to Conker's Bad Fur Day. ![]() Prior to joining Rare in 2012, Woodroffe was the head of game design at Sega, where he worked on Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed.Īs for Everwild itself, Rare did go on to say that the development team is in "good hands" and that the developers remain "passionate about building a game that will give players unforgettable experiences." Given that Everwild doesn't have an announced release window, there's no indication whether or not Woodroffe's departure from Rare impacted the team's development schedule.Īccording to VGC, Everwild's creative direction is currently being led by Rare executive producer Louise O'Conner. Since then, he's taken on the Creative Director role at several studios, including Headfirst Productions, Midway Games, and Longtail Studios. Woodroffe is a 30-year veteran of the video game industry, going back to his experience as a lead designer in the 90s for games including Simon the Sorcerer and its sequel. RELATED: Everwild Can Learn a Lot From Sea of Thieves Woodroffe has yet to make a comment publicly, though his Twitter account still lists him as creative director of Everwild. Nothing was said about the reasoning for Woodroffe's departure, though VGC is reporting that he resigned earlier in October and has actually been apart from Rare for the time since. "We thank Simon for all his hard work on Everwild and wish him the very best luck for the future," was all Rare had to say regarding Woodroffe. Rare confirmed with media outlet VideoGamesChronicle on Friday that Woodroffe was no longer a part of the studio. ![]()
